This paper assesses the impact of architectural regulations on the degree of freedom of architects in making design decisions. To this end, regulations are classified in three main categories with respect to: (i) level of abstraction; (ii) theoretical source; and (iii) adopting body. In terms of abstraction, regulations could treat highly theoretical abstract topics or concrete operational subjects. A regulation could also be derived from positive theory and empirical generalization, normative theory, or planning and design aspirations. In terms of adopting body, regulations could be adopted by high-level central government bodies or local bodies at a low level with respective decrease in their legitimacy.
