In Iranian academic disciplines, such as architecture and urban planning the term manzar has been commonly used as the Persian equivalent of ‘landscape’. Nevertheless, there has been little study on the validity, semantics and semiotic aspects of the choice of this equivalent. It is however necessary to undertake a comparative study of these two terms to better understand the body of tacit knowledge each term implies. This paper attempts to present the results of a comparative study of these two terms in light of their linguistic, semantic and semiotic background.
