The relative stability of places results in feelings of familiarity, predictability and security in residents. While constant change often leads to a disruption of place attachment and could adversely affect the residents’ mental health. The 17th Shahrivar Street was converted into a walkway some three years ago, with no consultation with or participation from the residents. This paper employs a grounded theory methodology to analyze interviews with 20 residents conducted with an open-ended questionnaire. As a result, five major properties were found to be: place justification; place finale; targeted emphasis; replication of sense of place; and presence of ‘others’. This paradigmatic model explains the process of ambiguity in public space as a core phenomenon. In conclusion, the prevalence of the political dimension of place as compared to its temporal and spatial dimension is emphasized.
