This paper attempts to elaborate the procedures for grasping the spirit of place in heritage monuments as living sources of information. The key research methodology is based on analogy and metaphor. Inasmuch the learner has to follow a certain courtesy protocol to approach, converse with and learn from a sage, a visitor should similarly observe certain courtesy protocols while visiting a place of heritage significance. To this end, definitions of courtesy are first reviewed in Islamic scriptures, as well as in mystical prose and poetry to explain that courtesy is the primary prerequisite for preparation of a learner to receive enlightenment. The spatial composition of some historic monuments is then analyzed to demonstrate how, through subtle spatial arrangements, the monument also prepares visitors for the necessary courteousness during their attendance.
