Production of solar electricity is one of the main sources of clean energy. As an alternative to electricity produced from fossil fuels, photovoltaic electricity is expected to play an important role in future as an effective response to energy demands—particularly in face of increasing environmental pollution caused by conventional means of production through use of fossil fuels. Building-integrated photovoltaic systems use solar panels on the roof or façades of the building to produce electricity in the vicinity of consumption. The efficiency of solar panels depends on receiving adequate sunlight. Their position thus becomes an important factor for architects to consider.
This paper initially reviews different calculation models for solar radiation to select a model that best suits the requirements of building-integrated systems. By application of this model to the conditions of Tehran City, solar radiation is calculated for diverse building surfaces. The resulting data is essential for selecting appropriate surfaces for installation of solar panels to maximize their efficiency.
