Architect, conservator, scholar and academician, Mohammad Kareem Pirnia (1918~1995) lent his life to the study and conservation of Persian architecture. The result of his doctrinaire study was his formulation of ‘five principles’ for Persian architecture. This paper reviews the evolution of this thought by reviewing his papers, interviews, prefaces, and books. His intellectual evolution is also explained in parallel to his early childhood in a historic city and enjoyment of watching traditional masons at work; his professional life as technical deputy of the then Organization for Preservation of Historic Monuments; his response to a modernist environment wary of tradition; and his contributions to the academic studies. His sources of inspiration and information include meticulous observation of historic buildings, learning from traditional masons, and reflection on his findings.
