Selection of students for graduate studies is currently undertaken by a single organization in a centralized manner for all the country. In 2004 and 2005, the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology allowed universities to give additional test with an impact of 30% in the overall results. Taking advantage of this opportunity, the Department of Architecture, Shahid Beheshti University, gave two additional tests. To assess the validity of these added tests versus centralized entry competitions, this research compares the results of those tests with students’ performance during their graduate study over a period of five years.
It is demonstrated that centralized entry competition test have a negative correlation with students average—an indication of the inadequacy of these tests. Although additional tests given by the university also lack sufficient accuracy, it is recommended that calibrated university tests should be included in the student selection process.
