Understanding and studying the wholeness of architectural experience in phenomenological approach has been introduced in recent decades. Some of the studies in this field concentrate on embodied and multisensory nature of this experience. Auditory experience as one of our significant modes of whole experience requires to be clarified as a mode of architectural experience, since architecture has been often understood as a thing comes into sight.
This paper is intent on disclosing the strong collaboration of auditory experience to understand architectural experience. To that end, firstly, we explore aspects of architectural experience as three aspects named events, physicality, and atmosphere, which are experienced meaningfully. Then, structural features of auditory experience as dependency to events, temporality, spatiality, meaningfulness and having personality are described. By defining two concepts as ‘evident hearing’ and ‘latent hearing,’ we describe the collaboration of auditory and architectural experience. Finally, we indicate the understanding of the wholeness of architectural experience through the uniqueness of a coalescence and atmospheric auditory space.
