The surrounding fabrics of the pilgrimage shrines suffer from a variety of problematic dimensions and pervasive inadequacies, partly due to the actions and interventions aimed at allocating the support needs of the pilgrims in various scales, which causes their partial inefficiency as heritage-cultural-pilgrimage contexts. This paper aims to achieve a systematic review of the dimensions and consequences of such interventions, examining the research carried out on the interventions in the surrounding fabrics of the pilgrimage shrines. Towards this aim, the qualitative approach and systematic review technique based on Fink's protocol and the strategy of content analysis and logical reasoning have been applied in data analysis. For this, 71 Persian and English research conducted in the period of 1997 to 2022 were subjected to structural and content analysis. The findings of the research showed that most of the interventions carried out in the surrounding fabrics of the pilgrimage shrines lack theoretical foundations and specific criteria for action, without approved laws in accordance with the tangible and intangible values of the context, and in non-compliance with religious rules with respect to the pilgrimage shrines. These interventions have caused problematic consequences to these fabrics, which can be classified in nine major categories of economic, spatial, physical, social, perceptual, political-institutional, visual, functional and environmental dimensions. In the reviewed studies, the spatial, physical, social, and economic dimensions, as the most problematic consequences of the interventions, have received the most research attention, and the political-institutional, perceptual, visual, functional, and environmental dimensions have been addressed less. The results of this article show the importance of adopting a comprehensive view of the level of Theory and practice in such contexts and the mutual influence of the dimensions mentioned.
