Objectives and Background: In recent years, the significance of vibrant public spaces as arenas for social interactions has gained considerable attention. Influential theorists such as Jane Jacobs, Jan Gehl, and Vikas Mehta have emphasized the role of “life between buildings” and social interactions within these spaces. However, merely designing public spaces does not inherently generate dynamic urban life. This study aims to identify the physical and behavioral indicators that contribute to the manifestation of life in interstitial urban spaces by examining Honarmandan Park as a case study to analyze the relationship between physical characteristics and social actions.
Materials and Methods: Employing a post-positivist paradigm and a quantitative survey-based methodology, data were collected via a Likert-scale questionnaire from a random sample of 400 park visitors. The questionnaire’s reliability was confirmed with a Cronbach’s alpha of 0.811, and construct validity was verified through confirmatory factor analysis. Data analysis involved Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) using AMOS software. Complementary analyses included multiple regression and one-way ANOVA. Model adjustments improved fit indices and the robustness of findings.
Results and Conclusion: SEM results indicated that optional activities, functional diversity, interactionability, and inclusiveness had the strongest positive effects on social life emergence in Honarmandan Park. Presence, security, walkability, land use, and urban furniture exhibited moderate influences. Correlation analysis revealed significant positive relationships among these factors, suggesting that enhancing one may bolster others. Multiple regression identified child usage, user gender, proximity to residence or workplace, frequency of visits, and availability of outdoor cafés as key contributors to collective life, while variables such as abandoned buildings and usage by disabled individuals lacked significant effects. One-way ANOVA demonstrated that only presence varied significantly with age, indicating differentiated perceptions of public space quality across age groups. These findings underscore the critical importance of diverse, inclusive public space design attentive to heterogeneous user needs to foster vibrant urban social life.
