Abstract

Despite their significant population and role, youth and children are usually neglected in the planning process. Use of visual arts is an effective method to stimulate participation of the younger generation and facilitate their expression of needs and concerns. Nevertheless, work on how their oeuvre should be interpreted is by far very limited. This research addresses means and ways of employing visual arts as a participatory planning technique for youth and children. To this end, available literature is surveyed using a qualitative and descriptive method. Then a sample of 90 children aged between 12~16 including both sexes are selected for a practical exercise. It is concluded that using visual arts yields promising results for stimulating participation.
